“This 1921 advert aptly evokes the intimate relationship that all travelers have with their trunks and luggage, companions on the road and on their journeys. From legendary trains to transatlantic liners, from automobiles to the first aircraft, Louis Vuitton trunks have crossed time and borders. As early as 1854, Louis Vuitton, “layetier, malletier et emballeur”, proposed modern trunks combining pragmatism and elegance, perfectly adapted to new means of transport and the changes in life they brought with them.
Since then, Louis Vuitton has equipped explorers and adventurers as well as the great and the good of this world, princes, dandies, elegant ladies, artists and anonymous people of all kinds. The Maharaja of Baroda, Savorgnan de Brazza, Douglas Fairbanks, Ernest Hemingway, Jeanne Lanvin, Damien Hirst and Sharon Stone have all traveled with Louis Vuitton. This exceptional book, with a preface by Patrick-Louis Vuitton, brings together the House’s finest creations through more than 800 documents.
Sleeping trunks, wardrobe trunks, tea-cases, toiletries, circus trunks, library trunks and caviar boxes are just some of the incredible pieces that reveal the exciting adventures of their owners. A complete technical inventory, a craftsman’s bible, also reveals all the secrets behind the making of a Louis Vuitton trunk. This compendium reveals that, from the very first curved trunks to the latest trunks designed today in the Asnières workshops, the spirit of the House is still driven by the same desire: to perpetuate the excellence of know-how and make the art of travel a true art of living.
